Can You Convert TRC-20 to ERC-20 (or BEP-20)?

Why direct transfers between networks fail, and the two safe ways to move USDT and tokens across chains.

You cannot send TRC-20 tokens directly to an ERC-20 or BEP-20 address. They live on different blockchains that don’t recognise each other’s transactions. But you can move value between the networks in a few minutes - the easiest way is through an exchange, and for less common tokens, a cross-chain bridge. This guide covers both, plus what to do if you’ve already sent to the wrong network.

Why you can’t send directly between networks

TRC-20 (TRON), ERC-20 (Ethereum) and BEP-20 (BNB Chain) are token standards on three separate blockchains. A token is native to the chain it was deployed on - “USDT on TRON” and “USDT on Ethereum” are two different token contracts that happen to be redeemable for the same dollar.

  • TRON addresses start with T… (base58). Ethereum and BNB Chain both use 0x… addresses.
  • A TRON wallet can’t receive an Ethereum transaction, and vice versa - the networks never talk to each other directly.
  • Confusingly, Ethereum and BNB Chain share the 0x address format but are still separate networks - the same address exists on both, which is why BEP-20/ERC-20 mix-ups are sometimes recoverable while TRON mix-ups usually fail outright.

Method 1: use an exchange (easiest, best for USDT)

For any token listed on a major exchange - USDT, USDC, TRX, and most large caps - the exchange acts as your bridge:

  1. Deposit on the source network. On the exchange’s deposit page, pick the token and select the network you’re sending from (e.g. USDT via TRC-20). Send to the address shown.
  2. Wait for confirmation. TRON deposits typically confirm in a minute or two.
  3. Withdraw on the target network. On the withdrawal page, pick the network you want (e.g. ERC-20 or BEP-20), paste your receiving wallet address, and confirm.

The exchange charges a flat withdrawal fee per network - ERC-20 withdrawals cost noticeably more than TRC-20 or BEP-20 because Ethereum gas is higher. Always double-check that the withdrawal network matches the receiving wallet before confirming.

Method 2: cross-chain bridges

Bridges (and bridge-style swap services) lock your token on one chain and release a wrapped or native version on another. They’re the option when a token isn’t listed on an exchange, but they come with caveats:

  • You often receive a wrapped version of the token, not the original contract.
  • Bridges have historically been a major target for hacks - prefer well-known, high-volume bridges and move test amounts first.
  • For USDT and other majors, an exchange transfer is almost always cheaper, faster and safer than bridging.

Sent to the wrong network already?

  • TRC-20 sent to a 0x… address (or the reverse): the transaction usually fails at the wallet stage because the address format doesn’t validate. If a service accepted it anyway, the funds are generally unrecoverable - contact the receiving platform’s support.
  • BEP-20 sent to an ERC-20 deposit address (or the reverse): often recoverable, because both chains share the 0x format. If you control the receiving wallet’s keys, add the other network in your wallet and the funds are there. If it was an exchange deposit address, contact support - many exchanges recover cross-EVM deposits, sometimes for a fee.

What about your own token?

A token you create is native to one chain and can’t be “converted” to another. If you want a presence on a second chain you either deploy a separate token there or have a bridge issue a wrapped version. Most projects simply pick the chain that fits their audience and stay there - see TRC-20 vs ERC-20 and TRC-20 vs BEP-20 for how to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send TRC-20 to an ERC-20 address?

No. TRON and Ethereum are separate blockchains with incompatible address formats. Move the funds via an exchange (deposit as TRC-20, withdraw as ERC-20) or a bridge instead.

How do I convert ERC-20 USDT to TRC-20?

Deposit your USDT to an exchange using the ERC-20 network, then withdraw it selecting the TRC-20 network. You’ll usually save on future transfer fees, since TRC-20 USDT is cheaper to move.

Can I convert BEP-20 to TRC-20?

Yes, the same way: deposit on BEP-20, withdraw on TRC-20. There’s no direct wallet-to-wallet route between BNB Chain and TRON.

Are TRC-20 USDT and ERC-20 USDT the same coin?

They’re both Tether dollars redeemable 1:1, but they’re separate token contracts on separate networks. An exchange credits them to the same USDT balance; on-chain they never mix.

Which network is cheapest for sending USDT?

TRC-20 and BEP-20 are consistently the cheapest options; ERC-20 is the most expensive because of Ethereum gas. On TRON, transfers can be near-free if you stake TRX for energy.
